House of Switzerland in Riga

Meeting place for floorball fans from around the world

At the beginning of December, the 11th Men’s Floorball World Championship title will be awarded in Riga. For the first time the Swiss floorball association (swiss unihockey) will be present with a House of Switzerland. A major goal is to raise the profile of the sport of floorball in the Latvian capital. And, of course, the House of Switzerland will also be a meeting point for the Swiss fans and the visitors from all over the world.

From 3 to 11 December 2016, the best floorball players in the world will come together to redefine the national team world rankings. It goes without saying that Switzerland wants to win the title of best national team. Floorball fans attending the 11th Men's Floorball World Championships can look forward to quite a spectacle at the matches themselves, but also off-rink. For the first time, the Swiss floorball association (swiss unihockey) will be present throughout the final weekend of the championships with a House of Switzerland in Riga from Wednesday 7 December to Sunday 11 December 2016. Right at the entrance to the pedestrian zone of the Latvian capital, the Kalku Varti building, including the restaurant and the nightclub, will be transformed into a meeting place for the floorball community.

The first national house in floorball

"With the House of Switzerland, first and foremost we want to offer the Swiss fans a shared meeting place and make the experience of the World Championships even more exclusive," says Jörg Beer, initiator and member of the board of swiss unihockey. At the same time, he also hopes to meet fans from other countries at the House of Switzerland. "We are proud to be the first country to have had the innovative spirit to take the plunge and present such a national house at the Floorball World Championships.” Who knows, maybe more floorball-playing nations will be inspired to do something similar, so at future World Championships fans will be able to visit different national houses.

A further goal was to bring the sport of floorball to the centre of Riga. Says Jörg Beer: "If we want to achieve our goal of making floorball an Olympic sport, we have to present it to a wide audience. Holding the World Championships in a country that is not yet one of the best in the world is perfect for this: there is no better way of advertising the sport than through the world-class floorball that we are going to see here in Riga!”

In addition to other focus areas, sport is an important vector for promoting the image of Switzerland, as set out in the 2016-19 strategy for Switzerland’s communication abroad. International sporting events such as the Floorball World Championships can therefore be used actively in Switzerland’s communication abroad. Presence Switzerland is there to advise swiss unihockey as a partner in order to ensure a certain degree of coherence in how it is presented.

What visitors can expect
