  • Athletics (August 12-21)

Athletics, the number one Summer Olympic sport, is the discipline in which Switzerland has won the most medals (8), without ever quite reaching the top of the podium. It came closest in Paris in 1924 when Paul Martin missed out on the gold by 0.2 seconds. In the shot put, Werner Günthör came within one meter of Olympic glory three times (1984, 1988 and 1992), but nevertheless managed to win the bronze medal in 1988.
